How to Pick and Install a Theme for your WordPress Website – Lil Assistance

The good looking theme is very important from an UX/SEO perspective. Choose your desired theme wisely and within 15 minutes your website will shine like a brand new supercar.

Environment setup:

  • We recommend that you use Google Chrome browser to navigate the web.
  • Admin access to your WordPress website.

Checking the theme used by another website.

We are sure that more than once you came across a website that amazed you with its look. You can easily check which theme is used by that website. In this part of the SOP, we will provide you with four sites that will allow you to check the name of that kind of theme

Checking theme with isitwp.com

  • Go to isitwp.com.
  • Enter website URL and click on “ANALYZE WEBSITE”.
  • You will be provided with information about the theme name and also any WordPress Plugin used on that website. 

We highly recommend that page for checking for theme name as it will also show you if the website you found is using WordPress

Checking theme with wpthemedetector.com

  • You will be presented with the name of the theme.

Checking theme with Gochyu.com

  • Go to gochyu.com.
  • Enter website URL and click on “Detect”.
  • You will be presented with “Theme Information”.

Checking theme with scanwp.net

  • Go to scanwp.net
  • Enter the site URL and click on “Detect”.
  • You will be presented with “Theme Title”, “Them Image”, “Price” and “Store” for that theme.

Checking theme without online tool

In case the website owner changed the theme name of his/her website, most of the online tools explained above won’t detect a theme name. In that situation, you have to check the theme name manually.

  • Visit the website with the desired theme and right-click on the free space and then choose “View page source”.
  • You will see that a new tab of your browser will open, containing the source code of the website.
  • Press “CTRL + F” on your keyboard to open a search window and type “style-css”.
  • The part of the code you need to find will be highlighted.
  • Click on the URL, just after the highlighted part.
  • A new tab will open with information about “Theme Name”.

Finding your theme on the WordPress Marketplace

  • Log In to your WordPress Admin panel.
  • On the left-side menu click on “Appearance”.
  • Then choose “Themes”.
  • A list of preinstalled themes will appear.
  • Click on “Add New”.
  • You will be presented with a selection of “Featured” themes.
  • If you are looking for a specific theme, type its name in the “Search themes…” box.

Try to type some keywords in the search box, like: “black”, “bright”. This will allow you to find theme that suits you the most.

Finding your theme on Third-Party Marketplace

      If you want to find a theme for your WordPress site, the obvious way would be to type “WordPress theme marketplace” in Google Search. There are many sites that provide numerous themes with a variety of prices.

      There are our top 3 recommendations for you to start your searching for a theme.

Easy to search marketplace with numerous themes to choose from. Some free themes can be found here.

This is the place if you want to try some themes without paying. Themeisle provides many free themes

All of the sites above allow you to download your new theme as .zip file. For example, we choose the “Neve” theme from Themeisle.com.

Installing theme on WordPress

Installing theme provided within WordPress marketplace

  • Log In to your WordPress Admin panel.
  • On the left-side menu click on “Appearance”.
  • Then choose “Themes”.
  • A list of preinstalled themes will appear.
  • Click on “Add New”.
  • Choose one of the “Featured” themes…
  • …Or if you are looking for a specific theme, type its name in the “Search themes…” box.
  • After you find your perfect theme click on it.
  • Theme preview will appear.
  • Click on “Install” at the upper left corner.
  • After installation click “Activate”.
  • You will be redirected to the Themes settings page of your WordPress Admin panel. As you can see, your new theme is “Active”.
  • Go to your website and check your page’s new look.

Installing a theme from the .zip file

If you bought a theme on another marketplace or some designer create one for you, you can easily add it to your page by uploading .zip file. Themes packed as .zip files can be obtained from many marketplaces – at the end of this SOP, we will recommend you some.

  • Log In to your WordPress Admin panel.
  • On the left-side menu click on “Appearance”.
  • Then choose “Themes”.
  • A list of preinstalled themes will appear.
  • Click on “Add New”.
  • Click on “Upload Theme”.
  • Click on “Choose File”.
  • Choose a file from your computer’s drive and click on “Install Now” (our new theme is called “Neve”).
  • You will see your installation feed.
  • After “Theme installed successfully” click on “Activate”.
  • You will be redirected to your WordPress Admin panel Theme section and presented with “Congratulations!”.
  • Now you can go to your website and check your website’s new look.

Now it’s time to dig in the documentation of your theme to configure it to your liking.
